Main applications
1. Extracellular vesicles and exosomes
Measures particle-size distributions and concentrations to support isolation, purification, and characterization studies.
2. Pharmaceuticals and drug delivery
Characterizes lipid nanoparticles (LNPs), formulation stability, and particle aggregation during development.
3. Viruses and vaccines
Supports particle characterization and process development for viral and vaccine-related research.
4. Nanomaterials and colloids
Analyzes particle-size distributions, concentration, and sample heterogeneity.
These applications are described by Malvern Panalytical.
How the instrument works
-
Sample introduction: A liquid sample containing nanoparticles is introduced into the measurement chamber.
-
Laser illumination: Particles scatter laser light; fluorescently labelled particles can also be detected in fluorescence mode.
-
Particle tracking: A camera records individual particles moving through the liquid due to Brownian motion.
-
Data analysis: NS Xplorer software calculates particle-size distributions and concentration estimates from the tracking data.

Main advantages
-
Particle-by-particle analysis rather than a single bulk measurement.
-
Light-scattering and fluorescence measurement options.
-
Automated workflows and machine-learning-assisted analysis.
-
Temperature-controlled measurements for stability studies.
-
Low-volume flow-cell option for samples as small as 250 µL.
Malvern Panalytical
Important limitation: NTA does not, by itself, establish particle identity, biological activity, or purity. Results depend on sample preparation, particle optical properties, concentration, and measurement settings.
For laboratory purchasing or equipment evaluation, it is worth confirming the required laser configuration, fluorescence capability, software and compliance requirements, service support, and validation needs.
